Any designers out there?

Part of joining this site for me is the chance to connect with other designers and share methods and ideas. Of course, BGDF.com is a great resource for that, but this site offers a different approach to it. If you are a designer or aspiring designer of board and card games - tell us who you are and what you do! I tend more toward the aspiring end of the designer spectrum. With no published games, I'm not exactly a great resource, but I plan to publish my first game, Captain's Cross, in the near future. |

I have some ideas for a few wargames, but school and work keep me from devoting more to them. :(

Most war gamers are frustrated designers. I’ve been gaming since the 70’s and have come up with house rules galore and have play tested several games in my day. You might want to look into Victory Point Games. They produce small games, both war and family by aspiring designers. My friend Hermann has two designs in the play test stage as we speak one on Zombies and the other on the American Civil War. I’m mulling a game on the book Mobey Dick, well the final battle any way. I got the idea from a game I saw played at Cold Wars in 2006.

Mobey Dick went through it's first play test with someone other then myself at the wheel. We didn't finish the game but I got to see where some changes needed to be made. I'll post again once it's had a real playt test. Please note that this is not a game on whaling, but a battle game of whale Vs man.

John - That sounds interesting and very original!
I had my first game published last year (Revolution! by SJG), and I currently have several more in various stages of the playtest/submission process. Here's a link to my blog, if you are curious about how I got there: http://revolutionboardgame.blogspot.com/ Just keep at it! |

Thanks Philip, as I said most gamers have a game in them and never act on it. Steve Jackson Games has a great catalog and you should do well. I'm primarily a war gamer and I don’t have the get up and go to do research and play testing that would require. Today we’re going to tighten up the rules a little. The game is still in a real basic stage and I’ll most likely add a few features before it’s finished. - JEB

Thanks! I can't believe Tom liked it so much!

I'm looking forward to trying out Revolution! - Been reading your development blog, and it's encouraging to see similarities to my experience in the earlier posts. |
